Half Dome training
It was a gorgeous day in San Jose-by-the-sea today. So I rode my Puch moped over to Los Gatos to hike St. Joseph’s Hill. I’ve been slacking off lately and I need to keep up for my Aug 25 Half Dome hike. The hike is about 5 miles of hills for about 90- minutes. One think I noticed was many folks with dogs out for a walk and many dogs with their tongues hanging out. And most humans had little to no water for them and their pet. Another observation are the mountain bikers who won’t yell they are coming downhil lbehind you at 25 mph. If you at all weave when you walk you risk getting mowed down. It’s tempting to shove a hiking pole in their spokes – just tempting.
The park is cranking out those Environmental Assessments. If interested, read the The Tioga Road Rehabilitation one and the White Wolf Lodge and Duplex Cabins Rehabilitation one. Comments are being asked for. It looks like the Half Dome Stewardship Plan Environmental Assessment (with Alternatives) will be released in September according to the NPS website. I encourage everyone to keep checking with the Yosemite Planning website and this blog for the latest.
KQED is the San Francisco PBS station. They have a local call-in program called “Forum.” They are featuring the Muir exhibit at the Oakland Museum. A tip of the hat to Maureen L. for her tip. She says it’s in its second hour Thursday 10 am PDT. But they stream at www.kqed.org, and they usually have Forum available for delayed listening.
I’m heading up to Reno this weekend for Hot August Nights. It’s an old car event and I am a classic car nut. But I will be teaching a Nordic Walking intro class on Friday up there. Before you sneer, Nordic Walking is huge in Europe for fitness. This is NOT like trekking up/down mountains – but it’s for fitness to burn up to 40% more calories than just walking. Watch this video with Lindsay Vonn, the great Olympic Skier – yes, she does it. I’ll be doing a training in Campbell, CA on August 17 if yall want to come. Sign up with sponsor lifeSport Fitness on their website.
