Bonus – I have one (1) permit for HD on July 4th I can give to the first person who sends me a PM to mrhalfdome@gmail.com I can scan it and email it to you. If no takers I will bring it on the hike or give to the Wilderness Office.

Today was the last shot to join the fracas for Half Dome permits. With only 10 available days, the odds of snagging a permit were not in our favor. Once again at 7:00:01 most were gone. But if you stayed on the line, many popped up as much as 20 minutes later as people did not complete their transaction within the 12 minutes allotted. Oh well moot point now. Who knows what 2012 will bring.I just hope we have cables to go up then.

So how do you get a permit now?  I did a long blog 2 nights ago so page back. Here’s the summary:

1. Keep trying recreation.gov. Permits are being cancelled and recycled. In fact, on Tues night at 9 pm there were 6 HD permits available. They were purchased before midnight.

2. Post a request on this blog at the page shown above (Put your contact info on the request.) Check back as good guys post freebies.

3. The day before, go to the Wilderness Office in the main village to see if any hard copy permits were turned in. Ditto at the YOSAR table near the Happy Isles trailhead.

4. Do the hike and ask along the trail and put a sign on your back.

5. Link up with a guide service. Many have openings (for a fee). I recommend LastingAdventures.com They are a non-profit and I accompany them on some hikes to give narration. We are going up with 7 on July 4.

So it’s worth checking for permits even at the last minute.

The “Royal Couple” will be arriving in California next Friday (yawn). No details have leaked out about their Ahwahnee Hotel.

Unrelated thought worth quoting:There ain’t no mountain high enough. Ain’t no valley low enough. Ain’t no river wide enough To keep me from getting to you.” -Marvin Gaye

Re: Royal Couple. I read in the Mariposa Gazette (6/30/11) that the Royal Couple was NOT coming to Yosemite.

How many ascents do you plan this year, Rick?

3 Maybe 4. July 4, July 16, Aug 25, Oct 6. Join me?? That will get me to 32. I know guides and others have WAY more..but I do other things in life.

I would love to join you but I’m an East Coast lowlander 🙂 I do have a permit for 8/2 and I’m trying to clear a week from my calendar to get out there for a few days beforehand, do a few warm-up hikes, etc.
