To help solve California disastrous budget problem, Sacramento announced a plan to close up to 70 of of the 278 parks. This will save $11 million in fiscal year 2011/12 and $22 million in 2013/14. Many prospective Half Dome hikers use the parks for training. The announced plan had 3 goals: (1) protect the most significant natural and cultural resources, (2) maintain public access and revenue generation to the greatest extent possible and (3) protect closed parks so that they remain attractive and usable for potential partners.  Some of the major parks set to close include:  Castle Crags, Castle Rock, Henry Coe, Jack London, Railtown 1897 and Shasta.
