Today we feature real time trip report from Brian Grigsby who rode motorcycles to Yosemite.

Last spring

This past weekend, my son Matthew and I rode our dualsport motorcycles in and around Yosemite. On Saturday we left from Buck Meadows and rode about 140 miles of trails and fire roads through the Stanislaus National Forest adjacent to the park and north of 120. This involved riding on dirt, rocks, sand, gravel, dust, mud, snow, pine needles, through multiple puddles, water crossings and over/under/around lots of downed trees. Got to see a lot of areas that you don’t see from the roads and you can’t get to without some long, strenuous hikes.

On Sunday, we did a shorter dirt ride of about 60 miles in the morning south of 120 and came out onto Hardin Flat Road on 120 just before the park entrance. There are still a lot of snowbanks on the sides of the road coming into the park and lots of small waterfalls along the road. The Merced river is flowing pretty well, but is not nearly as deep as I thought it might be. There is no snow left the valley and trails are dry. Lots of water coming over Bridalveil Fall and Yosemite Falls. You could still see snow on top of Half Dome from the valley floor. Overall, a great trip and great time to visit Yosemite.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: I only went out for a walk and finally concluded to stay out till sundown, for going out, I found, was really going in.” – John Muir, 1913

So I was wondering if it is possible to get up to the trailhead for HD at 5 am, go to the summit and try and hit the diving board on the way down, or is that too much for one day?

What, are you SuperWoman???? Geez, HD alone is a 10-12 hour event. The Diving Board is a BITCH. I started at 5:30 and gave up at noon….only got within about 150 yeards from HD and leagues away from Snake Dike / Diving Board. REAL hard…unmarked, talus, walls, thick manzanita. No way.
