I gave a talk about Yosemite today at “Trilogy at the Vineyards” in Brentwood today. Good crowd of about 30 interested folks. A big welcome to our new readers. I told them all about the park and also suggested a trip to Bodie, CA if they had time.  Tioga Road is closed until well into June, so this is for a later summer jaunt.

After your Half Dome hike, if you have an extra day, I’d suggest seeing Toulumne Meadows then continue east on Hwy 120 and head over towards the junction town of Lee Vining. Don’t blink, it goes by fast. Mono Lake is right there and is worth a cruise near. Head north on 395 and go about 20 miles to the turn off marked “Bodie”. Take a dirt road about 8 more miles and you’ll arrive at the Ghost Town of Bodie. (Oooo Ahhh) It’s one of the best in the country. Once a bustling gold mining center, it made many rich through the late 1800’s and early 1900’s.  Like most wooden western buildings of the era, it suffered a huge fire that destroyed much of the place, but about 50 buildings still remain. It’s now a California State Park with Rangers living on site. It’s in a state of “arrested decay.”  This means the buildings are not restored and will be allowed to suffer the ravaging winters and stifling summers and then vaporize.

Many of the building are open to gawk at. It’s like the Twilight Zone – it appears everyone was told to “get out in 10 minutes.” Stuff is laying around like they were told Vesuvious is erupting and scoot. My favorite is the school house. Olde Tyme desks with a turn of the (last) century anatomy chart hanging. It’s almost like it’s recess except for the layers of dust. Another favorite is the saloon. You can see poker tables with chips lined up and bottles of “courage” lined up on shelves. Behind the town stands the mine with a large conveyor belt that was used to process the ore. It’s only open on special days.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Angel came down from heaven yesterday
She stayed with me just long enough to rescue me. And she told me a story yesterday,
about the sweet love between the moon and the deep blue sea and then she spread her wings high over me.” – Jimi Hendrix
