This and that

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

This Tuesday, February 8, there will be a presentation by Dr. Roger Bales, Professor and Director, UC Merced’s Sierra Nevada Research Institute. He’ll be talking about the Sierra Nevada Snowpack, Climate Change, and Water Management. The event will run from noon to 1:00 p.m. Come to the Visitor Center Auditorium to participate in this interactive lecture series designed to bring evolving knowledge of the Sierra Nevada to the public.

Save the dates: The 150th anniversary of the Yosemite Grant is in 2014, the 50th anniversary of the Wilderness Act is in 2014, the park’s 125th is in 2015, and the 100th anniversary of the NPS is in 2016? Gosh, and I don’t; have a thing to wear. You can send you opinions on how the park should honor Yosemite’s many upcoming anniversaries. Click <HERE> toss your ideas into the hat.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “The peculiar features of the Yosemite are: First, the near approach to verticality of its walls; next, their great height, not only absolutely, but as compared to the width of the valley itself; and finally, the very small amount of debris or talus, at the bottom of these gigantic cliffs. These are the great characteristics of the valley throughout its whole length; but besides these, there are many other striking peculiarities and features, both of sublimity and beauty, which can hardly be surpassed, if equaled, by those of any other mountain scenery in the world.” Professor Josiah Whitney,  State Geologist of California, 1866
