Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

This is NEW news.  Word from Yosemite is that the process for permits will have a slight change. You still will have to be on-line at 7 am Pacific at recreation.gov to snag your 4 permits. In 2010 if you did not have a permit, you could go beyond Sub Dome. If the rangers had any extras given to them, they would give you one. In 2011, unused permits will not be given out at either the YOSAR table at the Happy Isles trailhead or 7 miles later at Sub Dome. You are asked to voluntarily turn in unused permits to recreation.gov. There will no refunds again in 2011, but if you contact reservations.gov, cancelled permits will go directly back into the pool of available permits online. These permits can be reserved up to 11:59 pm the day before your hike. If you make one of these last minute reservations and are not able to print out a permit, NPS will accept the reservation number and name of the purchaser as proof of having a permit. All this will be elaborated by NPS as the weeks roll on. I have summarized the “rules” for 2011 and refer you to my website. Go <HERE> and you can download them.

So this new process should help with those last minute hikers who just don’t plan. Also Euros who may not have a clue as to the rules can still do the hike. Folks can access recreation.gov at the self-serve computers in Degnan’s Deli in the main village to snag a possible cancellation.  There are no guarantees that any permits will be available. I don’t like to live that way. You can still beg along the trail as a last resort. Check back here as we get closer to March 1 (May and June permits available then) for Mr. Half Dome’s tips and tricks to get your desired date. My advice is to book accommodations NOW for any potential Half Dome hikes.

Unrelated thought worth quoting:I’m always slightly terrified when I exit out of Word and it asks me if I want to save any changes to my ten-page article that I swear I did not make any changes to.” – A wise old man

Can someone post a direct link to the Curry Village reservations calendar, and purchase page for the tent cabins?

All of my late May days last year were $39, plus minor fees and taxes.

? about the tenting at Lil Yosemite Valley. If I get a wilderness permit to tent-up there, what is the cost? What is that other place you say is good… Cedar Lodge on the hwy? Is that place cheap?
