Climbing News

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Hiking is in the same genre as climbing so I like to keep abreast of what those folks are up to. I’d never attempt something as big as Mt Everest (I like my brain cells to stay intact.) but it’s fun to read about happenings. Now I see that the Nepali telephone company, Ncell, erected a cell phone tower at the base camp. That’s like 17,000 feet up.  Now we can get instant reports during the May climbing season. Maybe someday they’ll get all the garbage off the mountain.

Closer to home, on Nov 6 another record was set on The Nose of El Capitan. Human flys Dean Potter and Sean Leary made it to the top in 2 hours, 36 minutes, and 45 seconds. This is 20 seconds faster than the previous record set in 2008 by Yuji Hirayama and Hans Florine  2:37:05.  Then I hear that Ammon McNeely completed his 50th different route on El Capitan! Hans Florine has been up El Cap 142 times.

In other news, crews have been working since November 3 on a water well at Glacier Point. In 2011 trenching alongside the road and utility alignments will be done to connect the new water well to the existing utility system. The well is being constructed to replace the surface water sources currently used for the Glacier Point drinking water system. Maybe they will fix the hideous toilet system up there.

I’ll be at BassPro Outdoor World in Manteca this Saturday at 2 pm giving my talk “Yosemite: A Park for All Seasons.”

The toilets at Bridalveil Fall are the ones I find disgusting. Sometimes the overwhelming stench can be polluting half the parking lot. Why so bad? Popularity, I would surmise,p
