September in Yosemite

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

<<The cables come down Oct 12 – so plan accordingly. >>

The weeks after Labor Day are a great time to visit the Park. If you can get away you will notice reduced crowds and traffic. The place is not empty but it is more sane. Many people refuse to go to Yosemite during the summer – well now there are no excuses. I spent the weekend at the park and did hike #28. I saw a few of you on the trail now that I have my official uniform – “Mr Half Dome” emblazoned on the back of my hiking shirt. I accompanied 6 women and the guide from Lasting Adventures. Allnewbies and all made it fine – 14 hours. I’ll write about our trip soon.

The drive up was pretty easy on Hwy 120. The “memorial” to the horse Cricket is still thriving just 8 miles east of Oakdale.

I talk about it in my book. The Priest Grade is still under construction but it looks like it will reopen Sept 29. You can look down and see fresh black asphalt and a very large paved turnout about half way down. This is the way to go to avoid the motor homes and slugs. Make sure your brakes are in good shape!  To bed now – fried after a full hiking weekend.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Walking:  the most ancient exercise and still the best modern exercise.”– Carrie Latet

Just so they are done with all the hwy 41 construction by next spring. That should really be some smooth blacktop.
