Wasn’t the permit system supposed to reduce time on the cables?

    • mrhalfdome Says:

No, the permit system was to reduce the conjestion to afford a reasonable retreat off the cables if a “situation” arose- people STILL freeze up and take forever to go up. But yes, the full 400 slots are not being used.

Compared to the density of folks on the cables at noon on Wednesday, June 23rd, this photo illustrates a mere trickle of climbers. I’m ready to jump to conclusions and say the permit system really helps! As Mr. HD has explained to me, there’s no hope of moving the cables, widening the cables or adding another lane of cables. The only option is to have permitting, or have none. And I can attest to the fact that having none means insanity on Half Dome.

      Bella,

The rangers told me that the Wednesday we went, it was the lightest day of that week…Monday and Tues were jammed. Yes, permti days are the way to go from now on. People are giving permit tickets to the rangers at the PSAR table at the trailhead and at Checkpoint Charlie.

      Mr HD
