Play Misty for me.

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
A tip of the hat to Andy P. for his update on the Mist Trail. He posted a YouTube <HERE> in case you missed his comment. What a deluge going on! Let me refresh you on my proven method  to get thru the Mist Trail when it is jamming like this. Refer to my book on page (fill in here). Take a $1.00 El Cheapo plastic poncho available at any Army Surplus store.  Bring 2 produce bags and 2 rubber bands. Put on the Poncho and use a metal “clasp” to secure the hood to the front of your hat. These clips are used in offices to hold  ¼ inch stacks of paper together. Without this clip your hood will blow all over and your head will get soaked. Take the produce bags and wrap them horizontally around the tops of your boots to act a gaiters…secure with the rubber bands just above the tops of the boots (ankle high) to keep water from getting in.

Since you bought Gortex boots you can step in shallow puddles of water – if they are deep, use your trekking poles to steady yourself to get around deeper puddles. Keep moving thru the 15 mins of wet times. Do NOT stop to take photos; your camera will get soaked. Just keep moving.  When you get above it all, hang your poncho over your pack and let it air dry as you hike – store it away for an afternoon  storm or give the set-up to folks coming down. By the way, I say go the LONGER JMT back (beyond Nevada Fall). If you go down the Mist Trail you risk a major fall from the wet steps.  So what page did I put all that on??   And have fun!!!

If you have or need weekend Half Dome permit tickets go to my blog entry titled Unused Half Dome permits <HERE>. Several requests and a few folks with extras have been commented on.

Special Alert from the Weather Guy:  …WARM WEATHER AND FAST FLOWING COLD WATER ARE A DEADLY COMBINATION…AREA RIVERS…STREAMS AND RESERVOIRS ARE DIRECTLY FED FROM THE MELTING SNOW PACK IN THE SIERRA NEVADA…THE WATER IS VERY COLD. OUTDOOR ENTHUSIASTS ARE ADVISED TO USE EXTREME CAUTION NEAR RIVERS…STREAMS AND RIVERS.

Related thought worth quoting: “On my own, would I wander through this wonderland alone, never knowing my right foot from my left, my hat from my glove, I’m too misty, and too much in love.” – From the 1971 film, Play Misty For Me, Clint Eastwood

And where the showers are so turbulent that the trail is a treacherous stream, you could temporarily tie bigger bags over your whole boots. I never got my socks wet, but I would recommend taking an extra pair of socks…

The bag over boots method goes bonkers after about 10 steps and the shoes burst thru…Gortex and gaiters work….
