NO cables before June 14

That’s today’s word from the park. Anyones guess now. The temps are soaring so it willl all melt soon. Plan on muddy trails. All that water coming down could result  in the Merced overflowing …. Crikey!  What’s a mother to do??  Here is what the official “ticket” to hike look s like:

It looks like  there are 3 sections… I dunno maybe one to tear off as you go up and one to  tear off as you come back down. This will be interesting – if anybody ever actually gets to hike it this year! Gee, you may recall that I bought up a gob to hand out to folks at my talks … well now I have a drawer of tickets that are worthless … and am getting credit card refunds  daily!

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “I think I’m gonna be sad, I think it’s today yeah. The girl that’s driving me mad is going away, yeah. She’s got a ticket to ride, she’s got a ticket to ride, she’s got a ticket to ride, but she don’t care.” – The Beatles

Received an email with the cancellation of the permit and credit as well as a phone call telling me the cables would not be up by June 11. At least they are communicating to us.

    Yosemite News Release:

Yosemite National Park Superintendent Don Neubacher announced Thursday that the Tioga Road will open for the season on Saturday, June 5, 2010 at 8:00 a.m. for all vehicle traffic. The Tioga Road, bounded on both sides by State Highway 120, is the popular east-west crossing of the Sierra Nevada. Vault toilets are available in several locations along the road.

There are several no-stopping zones along the road, which are clearly marked with road signs.

Due to the heavy snowpack this past winter (115% of normal) and a cool spring, there is still several feet of snow in the Tuolumne Meadows area. Hiking opportunities are extremely limited and visitors are urged to use extreme caution in the area. Additionally, ice is prevalent throughout the area and stream crossings are treacherous.

All campgrounds along the Tioga Road are closed. All commercial services, including the gas station, store, and village grill, are also closed. There are no anticipated opening dates for any of these facilities at this time.

    From the NPS website:

The Half Dome cables will be ready for use on June 16, 2010, conditions permitting. The cable route will be closed during installation on June 15. Snow remains on the subdome, below the Half Dome cables. A slip and fall from the subdome’s steep snowfield could cause serious injury or death.
