Fern Ledge

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Today we feature a Guest Blog from our Hamburg, Germany Bureau. Sonke K. is an avid Western US groupie and loves our sights – Escalante, the Sierra and of course Yosemite. He tells us about a favorite hike of his, Fern Ledge. I’ve never been there but now may try it using his great description.  If yall would  like to compose a guest blog, send it to me in an email (MrHalfDome@gmail.com) and I’ll have the panel of elders look at it and post it. Guest blogs are a nice break from my yaddling.  A tip of the hat to Sonke. Here we go->

I highly recommend the hike to Fern Ledge. You’ll be able to walk in the footsteps of Ansel Adams and John Muir.   It’s a challenging hike, but with little “trail traffic” (actually there is no maintained trail), lots of nature (flowers, trees and the occasional rattlesnake) plus you’ll see the Upper Yosemite Fall from an incredible point of view. In about 1936, Adams shot this iconic photo from here.

The hike starts from the Yosemite Valley floor (it’s a bit tricky to find the beginning but look for the talus field behind the Park Service stables) Just to clarify: this is not an easy hike (it’s not a long hike compared to Half Dome) because it requires some route finding skills, the trail is not maintained (loose gravel and rocks are plenty) and you might be exposed to nature’s elements. So be careful, be prepared and don’t risk anything. You know how to prepare since you all have read Rick’s book.  Final note: Fern Ledge sometimes gets mixed up with the Ledge Trail. Ledge Trail is closed and it’s VERY RISKY. Don’t try to hike Ledge Trail – only El Capitan and the Merced River have caused more casualties.

Related thought worth quoting: “One day you’re up and the next day you’re down. You can’t face the world with your head to the ground. The grass is always greener on the other side, they say. So don’t worry, boys, life will be sweet some day.”  We ain’t got nothin’ yet, Blues Magoos

This looks like a great trail…there is nothing better than taking the road less travelled.

In other news I hear the Merced might flood the valley a bit this weekend. I suppose all that snow has to go someplace.
