Permits to honor Esther K.

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Today I have serious blog. A good German friend is a lover of Yosemite and the US Southwest. I got to know Sonke and his wife Esther K. through the Half Dome world and even met them at SFO on one of their returns to Hamburg. Here we toast with a bottle of Carpe Diem wine.

Esther, Sonke & Mr Half Dome

His photo on the top of Half Dome is posted on my Reader’s Pix page. He is holding an American flag. A year ago, Esther suffered a strange brain anomaly resulting in heavy cranial bleeding. The doctors put her into a coma to try to remedy the issue, which might be a birth defect. She was in intensive care for 3 months and nearly a year in the hospital. The year has been a hard one. She is now able to walk very slowly. The couple would like to give Half Dome permits to people who will use them and enjoy the hike in their stead. They are free. If you would like to honor Esther by using these permits, send me an email to We will arrange for mailing to you. The dates are: Friday 9 July – 2 permits and 20 August – 2 permits. To manage this, we’ll have to go with the first two responses via my email,

PS Luis M. has won the June 12 permits.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Nature is a good mother and sees well to the clothing of her many bairns – birds with smoothly imbricated feathers, beetles with shining jackets and bears with shaggy furs.” – John Muir 1875

The August 20 permits were awarded to Tim M. He was first in with the request.
