Big Meadow Fire follow up

Half  Dome – Yosemite Musing

Road closure due to fire

An official National Park Service report sets partial blame on park officials for the massive “prescribed burn” fire that got out of control in September.  As was implied early on, the fire crews were confident that winds and other factors were within guidelines – but then Ooops.  The fire burned over 11 square miles and messed up my trip to do the High Sierra Camps. We had to drive almost 4 extra hours “the long way” to get to Tuolumne.  The fix? A revision of park policies is underway.  I dunno – doing  ANY burn in dry August?
I’m thinking of going up to the park to try and see the Horsetail Falls golden glow Feb 17 and 18. Send me a email if you wanna come. MrHalfDome <at> Horsetail Falls glows (maybe) the last 2 weeks in Feb if the cosmos is aligned right.  It’s to the left of El Cap and is easy to get to. I’m going to try a heated “Signature” tent cabin at Curry.  I got a “Dear Rick” letter offering such for $29 a night as a “Preferred Guest.” I think it’s cause I have money burning a hole in my pocket. Preferred? Gosh.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “The Valley is full of people but they do not annoy me. I resolve in pathless  places and in higher rocks than  the world and his ribbony wife can reach” – JohnMuir, 1870

I have mixed feelings about the fire.

We missed out on our planned trip to Hetchy Hetchy and the North Dome Hike but on the plus side we got to have lunch in the fabulous Wawona Hotel and see the spectacular Sonora Pass.

I think it’s the unpredictable wildness of California that adds to its appeal.

The fire sucked…no mixed feelings here! You could have gotten to Hetch Hetchy ez. Did you see the Mt Warfare Training Center at the East side of Sonora Pass? At Pickle Meadow? Marines and US troops going to Afganistan are trained there. Replicates that mountainous, cold terrain.

Just a bit too much of a round trip to Hetchy Hetchy…and I was a bit sore after hiking Half Dome anyway ;)…angered a groin muscle coming down the JMT so after Wawona took a dip in the Merced near Camp Curry…the cool waters fixed it…would have loved to have seen Hetchy Hetchy though…I suppose San Fran needs that water but still a bit of a shame…

Yes I remember the military base…just kind of appears out of nowhere…Sonora definitely replicates the mountainous that’s for sure…
