NPS Merced River Plan meeting

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

On Nov 10 I attended one of the Merced River Plan community meetings. I was at the Berkeley Marina to hear what the park had to say as to the planning process for the plan. I am watching the developments closely since the Half Dome trail and access to Half Dome is within the corridor of concern for the Merced under the Wild and Scenic Rivers Act.

Acting Park Superintendent Dave Uberaga opens the meeting

Officially the purpose of these meetings is to conduct a “public scoping” for the Merced Wild and Scenic River Comprehensive Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement (MRP/EIS).  It was pointed out that this plan is going to include the entire Yosemite Valley, Wawona, El Portal and the Merced High Sierra Camp and not be limited just to the pure corridor of a ¼ mile band around the river. Included will be direction regarding campgrounds, lodging, recreation and transportation.  A key point is that it will address  the maximum number of people that may be “received in the river corridor.” (NPS words.) During this “scoping” period, YOU are asked to communicate your 2-cents to the park . Specifically:
1. What do you love about the above areas?
2. What do you want to see protected?
3. What needs to be fixed?
4. What should stay the same?
