Yosemite Post Office

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Oops Fire update:  5,000 acres burned. 55% contained. Tioga Rd controlled access. Mariposa County state of Emergency declared. 968 firefighters, 11 water dropping helicopters and six air tankers.
Yosemite is like a little town. There is even a Post Office. And I don’t mean a little box on a corner.

To service the thousand or so fulltime and seasonal workers, the Post Office provides all the services you’d find in a typical city. It can handle deliveries of supplies for your back country trek or mail that postcard to Aunt Abigail in Des Moines. All with a Yosemite Postmark.  No home delivery – folks have to come by and check their PO Boxes.

The facility is located in the central area of the Valley, near the Visitor Center and the Ansel Adams Gallery. The zip code is 95389. This is also a good entry for your car GPS to get you to the park.

At 2 pm the park called me to say the High Sierra camps are still open. That was a nice gesture. We have been on the edge wondering if we were a go. Tioga Road from Crane Flat to White Wolf was in a restricted mode. Pilot cars were to lead caravans through to the east from 9 am to 6 pm. No travel after that. Tioga Road from White Wolf to Tioga Pass was still open and is expected to remain open. Then at 3:30 they announce that due to smoke and low viz, that road is closed until further notice. What to do? All we can do is call the High Sierra office in the morning and get a reading – and a refund if it’s off. Dang, I win the lottery and it now looks grim. Maybe we’ll pitch pup tents in the backyard and roast marshmallows. So this MAY be my last transmission until I return on the 7th. Keep up your hiking and I’ll give you a report later.

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “I have only one burnin’ desire. Let me stand next to your fire.” – Jimi Hendrix Experience.
