First Aid Kit

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
Most of the injuries that occur on the Half Dome hike are not from 300-foot tumbles off the cables. They are from simple stumble-doink trips and falls. A good idea is to carry a real basic First Aid kit. You are not going to set a broken arm, but you should have the basics. Here is what I consider to be the bare bones.

CIMG9650Neosporine or similar antiseptic topical treatment for minor abrasions. Then some sterile gauze pads to cover the wound. Some medical tape to hold the pad in place. Finally,  few band-aids for the smaller cuts.  All this can fit in a pocket if you are pushed for space. Yes, there is a lot more you could carry and I suggest you do. Things like cleaning pads to prep the cut – water from your bottle should also do the trick.  Another quick idea is to wrap your water bottle with foot or so of duct tape. This saves the space of carrying a real roll. Duct tape can hold a torn pack together, serve as a blister pad and keep a pair of broken sunglasses together. Seems like Duct tape and WD-40 are the gods gift to the world for thousands of applications!

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart. Stop! In the name of love, before you break my heart. Think it over. Think it over.” – The Supremes
