USGS markers

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

Last month we talked about the round markers that the US Geological Survey places on high peaks. This one is on top of Cloud’s Rest.

USGS Cloud's Rest

I asked yall to look around on top of Half Dome for one. I’ve never seen one. Below is what I bought at the gift shop. At first blush, it looks legit, but closer examinations reveals it’s probably just a “paper weight.” I’ve never seen one on Half Dome. But why not? Seems like it should have one. Let me know if you run into it. The coordinates on it read: N37 44 46  W119 31 55.   Bring your GPS and do some scouting.

Unrelated thought worth quoting:  “Mock (yeah) ing (yeah) bird (yeah) Yeah, yeah. Mockingbird everybody, have you heard? He’s gonna buy me a Mockingbird. If that Mockingbird don’t sing, he’s gonna buy me a diamond ring. And if that diamond ring don’t shine, he’s gonna surely, break this heart of mine.” – Inez  & Charlie Foxx

I was up there yesterday, did not find a marker after looking around for half an hour.

I don’t know if you ever found the USGS marker on top of half dome, but I just read a post today that says: “When you are at the end/top of the cables, bear right to get to the summit. The best views are from the USGS marker (the real summit), from a cliff that seems to be sticking out from the dome, and from the very northern side.”
Like you said, you probably have scoured the entire top, but if you do find it there, let us know. If it is not there, I would not be surprised if someone kept it as a souvenir, although I think they are probably not easily chipped off.
