Poles are the way to go

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing

I am a big fan of using Trekking Poles for the Half Dome hike. They will take about 6% of the work off your legs going up and will ease the stopping force on your knees going down. The gravel surface of the trail often causes slips – with poles you are secure. The 45-minute climb up Sub Dome is pretty scary and many people feel that that portion of the hike is harder than the cables. If you are going to fall – I bet it’s there. Nothing at all to hang on to. Again poles give you an advantage. Unfortunately, poles are not cheap – oh you can get $15 ones from a certain big box store. But good luck on the quality. I love my Leki Makalu poles. Very light and with springs in the grips to soften the plants. They run about $130 a pair. But are warranted for life. There are many others on the market – you decide which works for you. Here’s a list of the manufacturers:

Unrelated thought worth quoting: “It’s summertime summertime sum sum summertime. Summertime summertime sum sum summertime. Summertime summertime sum sum summertime. Summertime summertime sum sum summertime. Summertime. It’s summertime.” – The Jamies
