Stash your pack?

Half Dome – Yosemite Musing
You’ve just hauled up your pack, water and hiking poles some 7 miles to the saddle of Half Dome. Now you have another 425 feet to reach the top of the cables. Dang, it is getting heavy. So  what if I just stash my pack and unneeded food at the bottom and only go up with a snack and some water? Good idea? Maybe not. If you totally trust the hiking public not to walk off with your $129 Leki Makalu poles, then leave them at the bottom. Maybe put a note: “Please don’t take.”  And of course your pack. But let’s assume people that day are basically h0nest. So you leave your pack and stuff at the bottom before you begin your cable pull. As you can see by the photos, the squirrels and marmots may have not got the memo about leaving your food alone. They will get into your pack. I think they can now actually undo zippers to get to your booty. You can clearly see a critter pulling out a bag of Beef Jerky. And later digging into this pack. Yes, that brown furry thing is a squirrel. After I shot these pix, I put everything back in and zipped it up. I hope these folks got the message. Bottom line – haul up your stuff. And don’t take so much next tie!
Unrelated thought worth quoting: “Well, they’ll stone ya when you’re trying to be so good. They’ll stone ya just a-like they said they would. They’ll stone ya when you’re tryin’ to go home. Then they’ll stone ya when you’re there all alone. But I would not feel so all alone, Everybody must get stoned.” – Rainy Day Women # 12 & 35, Bob Dylan
